This homemade creamy and flavorful green chile sauce is delicious on enchiladas or smothering tamales or shredded chicken and rice. So many ways to use this versatile sauce…let me count them.
This hatch green chile sauce is super easy to whip together. The recipe makes quite a bit and luckily it stores well in the fridge, so this is a total make ahead for an easy weeknight meal.
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1/2 cup onion
- 1 clove garlic
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1/2 tsp mexican oregano
- 2 tbsp flour
- 1 1/2 cup chicken stock
- 2 can hatch green chiles
- salt
- 2 tbsp sour cream
- 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella
Instructions
Heat oil in a medium saucepan over medium high heat, add onion and garlic. Saute for 1-2 minutes until soft. Add cumin and oregano, allow to toast for another minute. Add flour to make a roux. Wisk in chicken stock, reduce heat to low. Add green chiles and season with salt. Simmer for 5-10 minutes until beginning to thicken. Just before ready to serve, stir in sour cream and mozzarella allowing cheese to melt completely. Adjust seasoning if needed. ??
