Wow, this post has been A LONG TIME coming!! Sorry guys!! Life gets in the way sometimes. So our kitchen has been mostly done for over a year now and WE LOVE IT! There are still days when we have to pinch ourselves because this is our dream kitchen and it’s just unbelievable that it’s the same house. Okay, so we still have to put up new baseboards…just ignore those hideous bare spots where the wall meets the floor, m’kay?
So here is our kitchen before. I am still shocked when I see these pictures. What were we thinking when we bought this house??? We must have really good imaginations!
And now….it’s so dang hard to even think that could look like this:
Okay, one more before…gah, just look at those floors and that hideous alien light as I like to refer to the old fluorescent.
As you may recall from our Kitchen Design Post, we kept the layout the same to save on cost, but we did take back the 3 inches of space on either side of the stove and extended the island to match. We also added a cabinet at the end of the sink wall to accommodate our trash can and recycling bin so that they’d be hidden away nice and neat; doing this also gave us MOAR counter space!Just look at those awesome floating shelves above our farmhouse sink!! I am in love with that sink. It’s so deep and wide; we have so much more space for washing dishes than we ever dreamed of having before in our old sink. The one pitfall of the sink though is that when you have a tall nozzle sprayer like ours, with how deep and low the sink sits when your turn the nozzle to spray it does tend to splash back, but that’s remedied by just pulling the sprayer out and down into the sink before using it. We couldn’t be happier that we went with glass doors on those two cabinets as well; they turned out great and I love how it adds more to the feeling of openness. Plus it’s another spot to display pretty dishes like those vintage pyrex and that cute little brie baker. We also purchased the rack for our Kohler sink, which you can see peeking through in the above picture. It’s great because it protects the bottom of our sink from getting scratched or scraped by heavy pots and dishes, plus it doubles as a dish rack so you can stand up dirty plates to accommodate more dirty plates. 😉 I’ll put a source list at the bottom of the post to include everything in the kitchen in case you are wondering about things like that dishwasher and rug. Over on the range wall, you can see how everything sits flush with the edge of the wall now. I was so glad that everything turned out perfectly here with all of our calculations and decisions about how much overhang to do on the counter tops. Who knew that deciding on something as menial as overhang would be so hard?? You can see the pot filler that was the bane of my husband’s existence for a whole weekend while he got it installed and the inset shelf behind the range that was such a clever idea. We love how that turned out and are really glad we did the herringbone pattern with the tile inside the inset to break up the brick pattern. Oh and yeah, that old thing? We plan to replace it with a shiny new gas slide-in range like this one eventually. We just kind of blew the budget a teensy bit and decided to hold off for now since this old gal is still kicking. You may recall that we decided to put all drawer cabinets on either side of the stove since Oscar suggested they’d be more convenient than opening up a door and then pulling out a pull-out drawer and he was so right. They have been incredibly useful. We store all of our pots and pans in them – they hold up to all of that weight well. Opposite the stove is our beautiful new island! Just look at it! Ogle at it’s glory. It’s like a hand-crafted piece of custom furniture. You can also see how our kitchen open ups to our family room, back door and breakfast room. The back half of our downstairs flows really well and has a very open layout – this is what sold us on this house. And now that it also has the same lovely dark bamboo flooring throughout, the space feels so much larger and even more open. That dark grey topped with that gorgeous Carrera marble and those shiny brushed nickel pendants…so in love. Those bookshelves that we added last minute were such a great idea too! The toe kick / footer accents and those curved valances turned out so perfect! In the island, we have a TON of storage space with two large drawers and lower cabinets that have handy pull-outs for storing all of our baking supplies and serving dishes. On either end we were left with a 9 inch cabinet, so we turned one into a pull-out pantry to store MOAR baking supplies. This is where we keep all of our jars of cornstarch and brown sugar and cake flour and baking powder, etc. It is the perfect spot for storing all of those smaller baking items within an arm’s reach. At the opposite end, we had Oscar build a cookie sheet tray cabinet where we store baking sheets and cutting boards! Love it!On the far wall beside the fridge, we added a coffee station for extra storage and counter space that would also serve as a place for our microwave where it wouldn’t take up precious counter top. I found that chalkboard at Homegoods before we even started this whole renovation process and it ended up matching everything perfectly! The toe kicks open up with the push of your food to reveal drawers that house the dog bowls so we can hide them away when they are not in use! Such a clever feature! Thanks Oscar!!The bottom half of the coffee station has two deep drawers and beside the microwave is a double door cabinet with shelving, which we knew would be just the spot for keeping our amassing collection of coffee mugs. We built the shelves out of a pine 2×10 lightly sanded and stained that screwed into the wall with L-brackets from Home Depot. We considered having shelves built to match the ones above the sink, but decided the space needed a natural / wood element to soften it a bit. The black brackets tied into the black pearl counter tops well and had an industrial feel, so they were an easy choice. Finally, our breakfast area got an upgrade with the addition of the coffee station, paint on the wall, and a new light fixture. We had already purchased the table (for $120!!) at an antique / vintage furniture store in anticipation of the changes! And of course, those amazing floors! I just love our breakfast room with all of those windows. So much light!! Perfect spot for taking food photos. 😉
So that’s our new kitchen! What do you think? Would you do anything different?
